Dominique, a talented defender, plays for Cercle Brugge and the national team.
Since 1911, Dominique has been a volunteer in the army. As an adjutant with the 2nd Regiment of Grenadiers, he is part of the Front Wanderers, the military football team at the Yser Front.
During an inspection at 't Wieltje, a hamlet between Sint-Jan and Sint-Juliaan, a bullet hits him in the abdomen during the night of 25 August 1918.
He is taken to the military hospital in Beveren-aan-de-IJzer. Sadly, there is nothing more the medical staff can do for him. He dies on 26 August 1918 at 6 pm, just 25 years old.
A few days later, on 29 August, he is buried near the hospital.
In January 1922, he is reburied in the presence of a large crowd at the old local cemetery in St-Andries, Bruges. The chairman of the National Federation of Veterans delivers a moving eulogy.
Cercle Brugge loses several players during the Great War. Their names, including Dominique's, are inscribed on the monument the Club erected for them in 1921.
