The War Dead Register site manages a range of personal data to be divided into different sub-types. Some only require user notification, while others require user consent.

1 Use of cookies
The Belgian Data Protection Authority defines a cookie as information stored in a text file, such as language choice for a website. When visiting the website again later, the cookie is sent back to the concerned website. In this way, the website recognizes the browser and, for example, remembers language choice.
Cookies usually also have an expiration date. Some cookies are automatically deleted when closing the browser (i.e. session cookies), while others have a longer lifespan, sometimes even until they are manually removed (i.e. permanent cookies).
However, other tracking mechanisms may fall under the ‘cookie regulations’ as well (see the broad definition included in Article 10/2 of the law of 30 July 2018 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the personal data processing).
The War Dead Register uses two types of tracking mechanisms:
* strictly necessary technical cookies;
* strictly necessary functional cookies.To manage the content of its website, the War Dead Register uses strictly necessary cookies. These cookies are essential for the proper functioning of this website. It is not possible to refuse these cookies if you wish to visit this website.
-
Strictly necessary technical cookies are cookies required for purely technical reasons. Given the technical necessity, only an information obligation applies and these cookies are placed as soon as you visit the website.

Search tips
First search generally, then specifically. Example: don’t look for “François Van Damme”, but try “Van Damme” first and filter the search.
The person you are looking for does not appear? Try another spelling. Example: don’t only try “Vanwymelbeke”, but also “Van Wymelbeke” or “Vanwijmelbeke”.
Attention: the War Dead Register only lists Belgian fallen soldiers.
The War Dead Register provides basic personal information (name, first name, date and place of birth, etc.) and does not contain military files (giving a complete overview of the military career). According to date of birth the files are kept either by the Royal Military Museum or by the Defence archives service. The files safeguarded at the Military Museum can be consulted on site (Parc du Cinquantenaire in Brussels). The files kept up till now by Defence are currently transferred to the General State Archives.
The date on which they will be once again available has not yet been determined.
