History
The Battle of Liège rages from 4 to 16 August 1914 and claims the lives of many Belgian soldiers. They are buried in three cemeteries in the Liège area after the war. One of those, Ougrée, is an exception: the fallen are buried in a mass grave and not in individual graves.
Bronze plaques on the monument list the names of 209 casualties per unit and in alphabetical order. The actual grave is situated in front of the monument. The families originally placed commemorative plaques on the lawn leading up to it, but these have disappeared over the years, giving the site a more sober look.
