Dixmude – Crypt
On the site of the first Yser Tower we find a crypt containing the bodies of some leading figures in the emancipation of Flemish soldiers who died during the First World War: Renaat de Rudder, Firmin Deprez, Juul de Winde, Joe English, Frans Kusters, Frans van der Linden, Edward and Frans van Raemdonck (they are buried together with the French-speaking Amé Fiévez), Lode de Boninge and Bert Willems.
Various administrative difficulties delay transfer of the first bodies until 21 August 1932; Juul de Winde is the last to be interred.
The low ceiling makes the crypt difficult to access. The Yser Tower is destroyed by a dynamite charge during the night of 15 to 16 March 1946. The monument is rebuilt 100 m further on. During these works the crypt is restored and made more accessible, but remains in its original location.
