By 1915 the Alveringem cemetery had reached its full capacity. As the number of casualties steadily increased an emergency cemetery was created in Oeren, around the by then desecrated church of Saint Apollinia. Contrary to the custom observed in front cemeteries the graves were positioned side by side and more or less according to date of demise. By 1925 the casualties buried in the surrounding villages were unearthed. They all received an ultimate resting place in the Oeren military cemetery. At that moment in time the venue counted some 509 First World War victims, 6 of them unknown.
