Cyrile Achile Peene is listed as "Peene C. Bixchote" among some twenty names on the memorial at the Major Seminary in Bruges. These are seminarians who served during the war, most often as chaplains or stretcher-bearers.
Called up in May 1915, Cyrile joined the T.A.S.S. (service number 197/20576) as a stretcher-bearer with the 3rd Regiment of Chasseurs à Pied. He was killed in action on 1 November 1918 during the Liberation Offensive at Oostwinkel, near the Ghent–Bruges Canal.
His remains were later repatriated to the local cemetery of Bikschote. Does his grave still exist today?
