Oscar learns through a telegram sent to his command that his brother Petrus – a soldier with Gn./4 D.A. – died of illness on 19 October 1918 at the Petit-Fort-Philippe Hospital in Gravelines.
Around seven months later, more sad news follows. In June 1919, their father Carolus receives two letters.
The first letter states that his son Oscar – serving with 2/II/2 C – drowned after being swept away by a whirlpool. He is reported missing. The second letter informs him that Oscar has been found and has since been given a formal burial by his fellow soldiers. The letter continues: “In the coming days, a solemn Mass will be offered for the repose of his soul.”
Petrus is buried at the Belgian Military Cemetery in De Panne, grave Q10. Oscar is buried in Oberkassel, but his exact resting place and grave number are currently unknown.
