Jacques Dumon, second lieutenant in the 3rd Lancers Regiment (originally from Bruges), fell during the 18-day campaign in Zelzate on May 23, 1940.
His body was repatriated from the Zelzate municipal cemetery to Bruges. From that moment on, all trace of his grave was lost. Not even the Bruges city archives show anything.
A breakthrough came through research on Lt Col. Maximilien Rademakers, killed in the First World War. That led to a family grave at the old Sint-Kruis cemetery in Bruges, Block 10, grave 21.
In that family grave also rest… father Fréderic Dumon and son Jacques Dumon. According to the gravestone, Jacques died on July 13, 1940. That doesn’t match the official date of death. This date likely marks his reburial?
