Women in service, such as wartime nurses, also died for their country. One of them was Sister-nurse Emma Van Neste, who passed away on 13 May 1916. Emma is buried in the Belgian military plot (Carré Militaire Belge) at the Cimetière Nord, Calais (Pas-de-Calais) in France.
While caring for wounded soldiers behind the front lines, these women were nevertheless exposed to the violence of war and to disease. After the war, many of them faded into obscurity. Their sacrifice was largely forgotten.
The War Dead Register honours the memory of these brave women. Do you have additional information about wartime nurses? Let us know at wardeadregister@warheritage.be - So their memory can live on.
