Cemeteries and military history
The War Heritage Institute is set on keeping both the history of military cemeteries and the memory of fallen soldiers alive. In 2022 the institution’s War Graves Service therefore launched the installation and/or renewal of information panels enabling visitors to immerse on site in the local past of some 25 military cemeteries. The project will run over three years.
A first series of panels was put on display in Boncelles, Bruges, Champion (Namur), Keiem, Lier, Oeren, Ramskapelle and Veltem-Beisem last year. Adinkerke, Hoogstade, Ougrée, Steenkerke, Westvleteren and Wandre have been addressed in 2023. Chaudfontaine, Eppegem, Halen, Houthulst, Leopoldsburg and the Polish cemetery in Lommel will follow in 2024. At some of these cemeteries visitors can also leaf through a brand-new information brochure and record their impressions in a guestbook.
