History
Waterloo’s plot of honour only counts one grave. Jean De Backer, resistance fighter, has found his final resting place here. Together with five other members of the Resistance he falls at the liberation of Waterloo in early September 1944. The Germans are then leaving the country and the Resistance is doing its bit to speed up the process. Although the German troops are hounded by the advancing liberators, they do not surrender easily. Battles break out in many places, including in Waterloo. The lightly armed resistance fighters are regularly defeated and lose many men.
The cemetery contains both servicemen who died in May 1940 and resistance fighters who died during the Second World War. Jean’s grave is the only one to receive military recognition. Lack of sources prevents us from establishing the reason for this difference.
