Belgian military plot of honour
This plot of honour mainly contains graves of soldiers killed on 10 May 1940 while defending the Albert Canal. Airborne offensives soon cause Fort Eben-Emael and the bridges over the Albert Canal to fall into German hands. The Belgian defenders give it their all and great resistance is offered especially near the bridges, but the enemy advance proves unstoppable. German superiority is too great and the Belgians are forced to retreat, but have to leave behind dozens of dead in the process.
The casualties are buried in the municipal cemetery. After the war, some of them are repatriated to their former places of residence and the plot of honours then acquires its final lay out.
