History
Roeselare’s cemetery includes many plots of honour. The war indeed targeted the town many times over. Belgian, British and French soldiers lie side by side as brothers-in-arms.
The Belgian plot of honour contains both military and civilian casualties. The fallen are from Roeselare or have not been repatriated to their former places of residence.
In this plot of honour 257 casualties lie under whitewashed concrete headstones. Only five of them are recognised as military graves. There are many empty spaces in between the graves, suggesting that at some point in time those fallen were exhumed to be transferred to their former places of residence.
