History
The 3rd Lancers Regiment leaves its garrison town of Bruges by train for Tienen to defend the rivers Grote and Kleine Gete. On 10 August 1914 the bridges over these small waterways are put under pressure by the advancing German cavalry and for three hours the Belgians face superior enemy forces. Especially the 3rd squadron led by commander Knapen fights heroically, but eventually has to give way. No fewer than 25 lancers lose their lives. They are buried in the municipal cemetery, where an honours court is established after the war.
